OUR GUEST SPEAKERS

INTERVIEW WITH MEHREEN ZAFAR SOOMRO (EVENT AND COOPERATE LIASION MANAGER, BIZTEK)

The following interview was held on Monday 1st of February 2010 when Mehreen Zafar Soomro (Event and Cooperate Liaison Manager, Biztek) accompanied by a few university students came to St Michael’s Convent School to brief the students on counseling. The interview was conducted by Amirali Sikander Shalwani and Mustafain Akhtar, both who are students of A’level second year of batch 2009-2010.

Q. Can I have your good name?

A. Mehreen Zafar Soomro.

Q. Miss Mehreen Zafar Soomro, tell us something about yourself and your qualification?

A. Well, I have done my MBA from Szabist in Marketing. I initially was a science student. My family wanted me to do science; they all belonged to a science profession such as doctors, engineers and pharmacist and wanted me to be one. I was never interested in being one, after my o-levels, I shifted to commerce and here I am with a MBA degree from a renowned university.

Q. What did you do after graduating from Szabist?

A. I met Noman Abid Lakhani, Chancellor and Founder of Biztek, also a former student of St. Michael’s Convent School. Since St Michael’s has such a huge pool of students, you usually get across with someone from high school. I started working with him in BIZTEK as an event manager.

Q. What do you think is your key to success?

A. Actually I am a detail oriented person; I focus on anything I need.

Q. What should be ones focus in life, for example, should one choose profession to earn good money or do a profession in which he is interested?

A. In Pakistan, for a guy, there is a pressure to earn money and to earn it well and just because of this, a lot of people end up doing a profession which no doubt are highly paid, but for him, that job becomes boring as he is not interested in doing that job. But what I feel is that “Vision in mind” and underline it please is more necessary. One should pursue the career of which he/she is passionate about.

Q. What role St Michael’s played in your career building?

A. It obviously has played a major part in my career building, after all, any school plays an important role in making ones career. But above all, it groomed me.

Q. Any message that you want to give?

A. Believe in yourself and make some difference.

HUMAIR ANWAR:

Words fall short when we talk about this person. Since his teenage period, he has been struggling hard to earn not only for his education, but also to sustain his family.
He graduated from St.Michael’s in 2004 with 6 B’s and 2 C’s. While in Michaels’s, he was part of the collage team. He was compelled to do Inter by his father because he wanted him to become an engineer. He did appear for his 1st year papers, but realized that this was not his field. He then did his A-levels in 4 months.
He did his bachelors from Szabist (evening program). He always had a flare for writing. He then started writing for BBC Urdu. He also wrote for Daily Times and Business Recorder. He then got a job in Spider Magazine in 2006 as an assistant editor.
Then in 2008, he applied for journalism at Express 24/7 news channel. He submitted a half an hour documentary, Mr Lakhani, the head of the channel liked it and appointed him as the Associate Producer.
He then shifted to Lahore because the channel operated from there. The job itself is very nerve-racking and challenging, social life becomes zero. Recently, he got promoted to a producer and his current salary is 80000 excluding fringe benefits.
He said that journalism is the only field which is not affected by economic recession.
He advised the students that if you want to get in writing, one should always read papers, magazines and books. One should build up his/her passion by doing a lot of research work.
